Abstract

1. Sulfenyl chlorides add to methacrylic acid and its derivatives preferentially with the formation of theβ-chloro-α-alkthio derivatives of isobutyric acid. 2. In order to compare the properties the isomericα-chloro-β-(β-chloroethylthio) derivatives of isobutyric acid were obtained by the cleavage ofα-chloro-α-methyl-β-propiothiolactone. 3. Of the obtainedβ-chloro-α-alkthio derivatives of isobutyric acid, the esters and amides are unstable compounds and isomerize under ordinary conditions to the correspondingα-ehloro-β-alkthio derivatives of isobutyric acid. The nitriles of theβ-chloro-α-alkthioisobutyric acid are stable under ordinary conditions. 4. Isomerization of theβ-chloro-α-phenylthio derivatives of isobutyric acid was not observed.
