Abstract

The CuII ion in the title compound, (C5H7N2)2[Cu(C3H2O4)2(H2O)2], is located on an inversion centre and coordinated by four O atoms from two bidentate malonate (mal) ligands in the equatorial plane and two O atoms from two coordinated water molecules in the axial positions, forming an elongated octahedral geometry. Each [Cu(mal)2(H2O)2]2− anion bridges two 2-aminopyridinium cations via N—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and symmetry-related anions via O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds, to form an infinite one-dimensional chain. Additional O—H⋯O and C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds generate two-dimensional sheets that are joined into a three-dimensional network via N—H⋯O, C—H⋯O and interlayer π–π interactions between aminopyridinium cations (symmetry code: 1-x,1-y,2-z).
