Abstract

The hydroxo-complex [{(Ni(C 6F 5) 2(μ-OH)} 2] 2 − reacts with salicylaldehyde in a 1:2 molar ratio to give the mononuclear anionic derivative [Ni(C 6F 5) 2( o-OC 6H 4CHO)] −. The coordinated salicylaldehydate does not react with amines but proton abstraction from the preformed salicylaldimines by the hydroxo-complex leads to the formation of the corresponding complexes [Ni(C 6F 5) 2 ( o-RN  CHC 6H 4O)] − [R  CH 3,C 2H 5 CH(CH 3) 2 CH 2C 6H 5 C 6H 5 p-ClC 6 H 4, p-BrC 6H 4, o-CH 3C 6H 4, p-CH 3C 6H 4, o-CH 3OC 6H 4, p-CH 3OC 6H 4, or [α-naphthyl]. All the complexes have been isolated as the [N nBu 4] + salts and have been characterized by partial elemental analyses, conductance measurements, thermal analysis, and spectroscopic (IR, V-UV, and 1H and 19F NMR) methods.
