Abstract

The purpose of this study was to test the influence of birth-order complementarity on marital adjustment. The Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale (1976) was administered to 327 married women. Birth-order complementarity was found to be unassociated with marital adjustment. Marital adjustment was found to be greater-although not significantly-for combinations of an oldest born wife with a later born husband than vice-versa. It was proposed that research focusing on patterns of interaction may yield more results.
