Abstract

Birth in the left lateral position is discussed as an alternative to the traditional dorsal lithotomy position for delivery. The advantages and disadvantages of the left lateral position for birth are explored, and a table of findings in the literature is presented. The reported appropriateness of the left lateral position for normal births as well as selected operative obstetric procedures suggests that the left lateral position may more highly adaptable for birth than was thought. The author's techniques and procedures to accompany birth in the left lateral position are outlined. Birth in the left lateral position is a childbirth alternative that may be taught successfully to students
