Abstract

We investigate the effect of quantum interference due to the spontaneous emission on the linear magneto-optical rotation (MOR) in the V-type three-level atomic system. It is shown that, in the presence of a static magnetic field, the vacuum induced coherence can enhance birefringence via the Macaluso–Corbino effect. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the Doppler effect due to the motion of atoms plays a destructive role in the linear MOR. Our results show that birefringence enhancement due to spontaneously generated coherence (SGC) does not appear in the Λ-type three-level atomic system.
