Abstract

This paper presents some preliminary considerations concerning a group of seven Protopalatial (Middle Minoan IB-IIB, 19th-18th centuries BC) vessels brought to light at the Minoan site of Phaistos, Southern Crete, during D. Levi’s excavations (1950-1966): the so-called “birdcage vases” or “nesting boxes” (vasi a gabbietta, vasi delle rondini). These vases are characterised by a closed globular shape with a large opening on one side and a handle-ring on the top, by which to hang and carry the objects. Similar vases have also been found in the Western Mesara plain (at the nearby sites of Haghia Triada and Kamilari), in Northern Crete (Knossos and Malia) and also outside the island (Haghia Irini, Keos). In this paper, the vessels will be considered contextually to gain information about their chronology and possible use(s).
