Abstract

This chapter focuses on field survey and census techniques, the difference between one-off surveys and long-term year-on-year monitoring of birds in particular study areas. It is concerned with estimating population sizes and densities, or indices of densities for particular species. It lists the key decisions that need to be made before a project is started, and discusses sampling strategies, levels of accuracy and precision, and field methods, including the pros and cons of mapping methods, line transects, point transects, and other counting procedures. It also discusses detection probabilities, and the problems presented by colonies, flocks, and passing migrants. It deals with capture techniques, tape playback, and other vocal methods, including the identification of individuals from their calls.
