Abstract
A set of anisotropic EPR spectra was observed in X-irradiated α-quartz at approximately 40 K and was analyzed, disclosing that the species responsible is a biradical, with unpaired electrons thought to be respectively on distant (8 Å apart) oxygen ions related by a twofold crystal symmetry axis. The spin- Hamiltonian H s was obtained by use of exact matrix diagonalization. The exchange energy is available from H s and is J/ hc = 6.30 × 10 −3 cm −1, i.e., of the same order of magnitude as the magnetic dipolar coupling (2.91 × 10 −3 cm −1), and smaller than the Zeeman interaction energy at the magnetic fields used. Possible models for the biradical are discussed.
