Abstract
Bipolar disorder is a common psychiatric disorder characterized by affective instability and cognitive deficits, particularly during mood episodes. Abnormalities within the anterior limbic network and related brain regions appear to be involved in the neurophysiology of bipolar disorder. Moreover, studies indicate a high level of heritability in bipolar disorder, although the involvement of specific genes has not been definitively established. Several effective pharmacological treatment options exist for patients with bipolar disorder. Future studies combining neurocognitive, neuroimaging, and genetic techniques may be useful to identify endophenotypes of bipolar disorder and ultimately to develop rationale treatment strategies and improve the outcomes of individuals with bipolar disorder.
