Abstract

Abstract Notwithstanding recurrent episodes of fish kills due to Prymnesium parvum observed from 1972 in an Italian brackish lake, algae producing biotoxins were firstly identified only in 1985 in freashwater lakes. Since 1988 PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) producing algae and DSP (Diarrhoeic Shellfish Poisoning) mussels were detected in the Adriatic sea. It is likely that the phenomenon was underestimated in the past.
