Abstract

In two preceding papers on "Biotechnology in Japan, 1984" [1, 2], newsletters and articles of Japanese origin were analysed in order to evaluate the country's progress towards the establishment of a bio-industry [3]. Pursuing this approach further into 1985, it becomes apparent that the momentum of both the Japanese bio-industry and of public bio-research has again increased significantly. While the number of sources covering this topic in Western languages is steadily increasing (examples: 4--8), the competent coverage (in Japanese language) of this field by the staff of Nikkei Biotech deserves special appreciation.
