Abstract

The morphological diversity of the North American component of Trisetum spicatum was analyzed in an attempt to resolve taxonomic problems associated with inconsistent infraspecific treatments. Three-hundred and fifty specimens representing the North American distribution were measured for 33 morphological characters and the data were analyzed phenetically. The morpho- logical data reveal extreme variation within the species and do not support the recognition of infraspecific taxa or the elevation of the hexaploids to specific rank.
