Abstract

Feeding experiments with various labeled forms of mevalonic acid were carried out with Thamnosma montana tissue cultures. Three furanocoumarins, isopimpinellin ( 2), alloimperatorin methyl ether ( 3) and isoimperatorin ( 4) were isolated and the position of label was determined through specific degradations. Mevalonic acid was shown to be a specific precursor of the furan ring and the alkyl and alkyl-ether chains of these furanocoumarins.
