Abstract

A Rhizobium "hedysari" wild type strain and three mutants ob tained by thermal shock have been tested for activity and specificity in the pro duction of poly(β-hydroxyalkanoate)s under different feed conditions. The pro ductivity of the strains is very much affected by the composition of the culture medium, while their specificity remains practically unaltered. In every case poly(β-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with high molecular weight and narrow molec ular weight distribution was produced. Compared to the original wild-type strain the mutants, even plasmid-free, display only a lower activity in the PHB production that appears to be chromosomically encoded.
