Abstract

The biosynthesis of narasin in cultures of Streptomyces aureofaciens has been studied using [1- 13C, 18O 2] labelled acetate and butyrate, and by Incubation of cultures under an atmosphere of 18O 2. The origins of the eleven oxygen atoms in narasin have thereby been established and this provides information regarding the mechanism of heterocyclic ring and bis-spiroketal formation.
