Abstract

Renin-like activity (RA) was detected by bioassay and radioimmunoassay in culture media of pineal glands of male rats. The monolayer tissue culture of pineal cells from adult and newborn male white rats produced in 30 days, an amount of RA that was 20-fold greater than the RA in nonincubated pineal glands from rats of the same age. The cultured intact pineal glands from Long Evans and Brattleboro adult male rats produced in 7 days an amount of RA (radioimmunoassay) that was about 3 times greater than that found in nonincubated pineal glands from the same rat. These results suggest that cultured cells of rat pineal glands synthesize renin-like enzymes.
