Abstract
Sea snakes ( Laticauda semifasciata) were injected with C 14-isoleucine (2 μCi each) into the venom glands and erabutoxins a and b were isolated. The toxin molecules were synthesized from the amino terminus of the molecules in about 1 min incorporating the labelled isoleucine without conversion into other amino acids. The synthesized toxins stay in the venom glands for more than 2 days. Puromycin and cycloheximide inhibited the biosynthesis suggesting an involvement of the ordinary protein synthesizing system. The inhibition by actinomycin D was partial. The ratio of the rates of biosynthesis of erabutoxins a and b was equal to the ratio of the amounts of the two toxins in the glands and varied from one snake to another.
