Abstract

a 1. 1. Isobutyric acid in the osmeterial secretion of Papilio aegeus 4th(last)-instar larvae is derived from l-valine. 2. 2. The precursors of β-hydroxybutyric acid in the secretion of 3rd-instar caterpillars are either acetate or leucine. 3. 3. Radioactivity is incorporated into isobutyric acid from [ 14C]valine by isolated osmeteria in vitro. 4. 4. The osmeterial tissue of 4th-instar caterpillars contains high titres of branched-chain amino-acid transaminase activity. 5. 5. Implications and significance of these data are discussed.
