Abstract

β- L-[ 14 15N]Cyanoalanine administered to Lathyrus sylvestris W. seedlings formed asparagine with complete retention of cyano nitrogen. The β-cyanoalanine pathway for the young plant may be a means of conserving nitrogen as well as of detoxifying cyanide. The required β- L-[C 15N]cyanoalanine was synthesized by hydrogenolysis of carbobenzoxy- L-β-[C 15N]cyanoalanine benzyl ester, prepared by dehydration of known carbobenzoxy- L-[ amide- 15N]asparagine benzyl ester. ( 15NH 4) 2SO 4 was the source of 15N.
