Abstract

The biosynthesis of virginiamycin S 1 has been investigated by means of radiotracer techniques. As a part of this study, a new synthesis of (R,S)-4-oxopipecolic acid was devised, and a procedure for preparation and hplc analysis of amino acid N-benzoyl derivatives was developed. The antibiotic is shown to arise from the amino acids phenylalanine, threonine, methionine, lysine, and proline
