Abstract

The estrogen-synthesizing capacity in the immature ovary of the teleost Jenynsia lineata was studied in vitro, incubating the tissue with tritiated progesterone, pregnenolone and testosterone. Estradiol-17β and estrone were isolated and characterized in all incubations. The occurrence of both estrogens was predominantly observed when pregnenolone was used as substrate. In vivo studies showed significant uptake of[ 3H] estradiol by Jenynsia's uteri. The in vivo distribution of labelled estradiol suggests an enterohepatic circulation of this hormone.
