Abstract
Volume I of Late Cenozoic Yushe Basin, Shanxi Province, China: Geology and Fossil Mammals presents the physical setting of Yushe Basin on the eastern edge of the Loess Plateau in North China, and documents the stratigraphy and paleomagnetic dating of the Yushe Group. The importance of Yushe Basin in the development of modern vertebrate paleontology in China is explored through historical records. Yushe Basin remains the single best relatively continuous Late Neogene sequence in North China on which to base Pliocene biostratigraphy. Its multiple fossil horizons spanning the Late Miocene to Early Pleistocene permit definition of biochrons, examination of faunal turnover, estimation of local residence durations at the species level, and access to an important source of data on biogeographical distributions of Late Neogene mammals.
