Abstract
Biosorption of lead from aqueous solutions was studied using microorganisms isolated from soil samples. The parameters of solution pH, initial metal concentration and residence time were studied. It was found that cell free extract of Pseudomonas sp. biosorbs metal ions more effectively than whole cells. The removal efficiency was usually higher at low influent lead concentration and long residence time. Presence of other cations and anions inhibited lead uptake in the following order : for the cations, Mn2+ > Zn2+ > Cd2+; for the anions SC>42‐> Cl‐.
