Abstract

Biosorbents offer a realistic alternative to established processes for the elimination of heavy metals from wastewaters as well as for the recovery of valuable materials. This paper describes and compares the use of different biosorbents occurring as waste products from fermentation processes with regard to their suitability for the purification of metal‐containing wastewaters. Besides the type and concentration of the metals the influence of the oxidation state of the cations and of the pH value of the system on the sorption capacity of the microorganisms are investigated.
