Abstract

Objectives
The objective was to create a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the return to oral and maxillofacial surgical practices aimed at biosafety parameters.
Study Design
Literature review covering the beginning of the pandemic up to the present and tackling biosafety standards and protocols related to dental practices was conducted.
Results
Fifty-two bibliographic references were used stating considerations to be followed in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In addition to limiting such practices to urgent and emergency procedures, it is of importance to adopt strict biosafety measures, PPE usage, and infection controlling via adequate team training of working professionals. Adoption of a logical sequence for building an effective barrier is important, particularly because SARS-CoV-2 is transmitted through respiratory droplets and/or body fluids and direct contact with infected blood and/or contaminated surfaces. Maintenance of such measures in surgical clinics becomes imperative to prevent the occurrence of cross contamination, and SOPs become essential for the correct for the proper use of PPE and the reduction of aerosols during activity. In addition, other tools, such as an initial teleconsultation for COVID-19 symptoms, can be launched.
Conclusions
Formulation of SOPs is aimed at a safer practice of clinical surgery for both the patient and the dental surgeon.
