Abstract

ABSTRACT A statistical approach was used to determine whether nutrient and/or microbial inoculation enhances the loss of crude oil experimentally released onto plots on the shoreline of Delaware Bay. Five replicates of three treatments were examined (nutrients alone, nutrients plus an inoculum of indigenous bacteria from the site, and an unamended control). An unoiled control served as a baseline for microbiological and toxicological studies. Preliminary results suggested that, although microbial growth was similar on all oiled plots, alkanes degraded faster on the nutrient plots than on the unamended plots by week 2.
