Abstract

This article will review sexuality from two perspectives. One will be for professionals and significant others who find sexuality a difficult topic to discuss because of people's discomfort with the topic. The second factor will be a discussion of the knowledge and treatment of sexuality with the neurologically impaired patient. A review of the cognitive, behavior, emotional and physical changes that arise from neurologic disability will clarify the need for further education of this population. There is an urgent need for professionals, clients and families to learn about sexuality and neurologic disability. This will include an understanding of all the perspectives in the treatment process as well as how to develop an effective working relationship between professionals and patients. The article offers a review of necessary treatment interventions that include sexual therapy, sexual adjustment counseling, sexual training programs and the use of support groups. The conclusion discusses key issues such as masturbation, erotica, and the use of sexual surrogates.
