Abstract

Twelve alkaline protease producing bacteria were isolated and characterized from Lonar soda lake, District Buldhana, Maharashtra. Of these, a gram positive rod shaped organism LAP42 was selected for alkaline protease production. It was identified as Bacillus pasteurii using cultural, microscopic and biochemical characterization. Isolate LAP42 showed luxuriant growth at temperature 30 o C, pH 10 and at 1% NaCl concentration. Catalytic activity of crude alkaline protease was found optimum at pH 10 and 65 o C temperature. Catalytic activity of crude alkaline protease was enhanced in presence of 5 mM CaCl 2 and MgSO 4 . Alkaline protease produced from LAP42 showed compatibility with laundry detergents.
