Abstract

This paper describes areas in which Marxist economists can benefit from a biophysical analysis of economic production and biophysical economists can benefit from a Marxist analysis of valuation and distribution. For Marxists, I describe how biophysical analyses clarify the physical basis for production, expand the dialectic governing the extraction of surplus value, and help socialist economies manage their resource base. For biophysical economists, I describe how dialectical analysis can improve their understanding of the relation between resource quality and economic production, and how social forces influence the physical determinants of production.
