Abstract

Fasciola gigantica is one of the dçstructive internal parasites of ruminants in Turkey. Oytun (1942) was the first to identify it in this country. İt had probably infected Turkey's livestock for many years before this, as livestock owners already knew two types of flukes occurred in their domestic ruminants. İn some parts they called F. gigantica «snake fluke» fluke» or «leaf fluke». and F. hepatica «leech F. gigantica has been reported from many areas in Turkey, often from the v/estern and Southern parts of the country and less freguently from the Anatolian Plateau. Since it is guite similar to F. hepatica in appearance it is guite possible that each has been mistaken for the other.
