Abstract

Among the insects that feed on above-ground portions of lawn grasses, 2 species of chinch bugs have become prominent. The southern chinch bug, Blissus insularis Barber (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae) is a major limiting factor in successful culture of St. Augustinegrass, Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kunze, in Florida and the Gulf Coast region. A large lawn pest control industry has developed to service this problem. The hairy chinch bug, Blissus leucopterus hirtus Montandon, is of increasing concern farther north, epecially along the Eastern Seabord and parts of the Middle West.
