Abstract

The use of plants as biomonitors of air pollution by heavy metals is discussed on the basis of the literature and the author’s own experience. The use of indigenous mosses for large-scale surveys is treated in particular detail, and the usefulness of this monitoring technique is critically evaluated in relation to general requirements and available experience and illustrated by recent evidence from the authors laboratory- In spite of some difficulties, mosses are considered to be very useful biomonitors especially for large-scale studies of heavy-metal deposition from the atmosphere.
