Abstract

This chapter introduces the biomimetic devices currently under research and development at Kansai University. Biomimetics research is actively being pursued to develop innovative products, including magic adhesive tapes inspired by the footpads of geckos, sharkskin swimwear for reducing fluid resistance, and Shinkansen pantographs shaped like the wings of an owl for reducing wind noise. micro electro mechanical systems processing, which is based on the fine processing technology for semiconductors, revolutionizes the concepts of previous mechanical processing methods to enable the creation of fine structures of the order of micrometers or nanometers. An ultra-high-precision laser lithographic system has been installed at Kansai University to perform three-dimensional shaping. The laser lithographic method requires considerable time and cost for manufacturing one needle; hence, it is not an appropriate manufacturing method for needles used for drawing blood, which are intended to be single-use needles.
