Abstract
ABSTRACT Actinia equina L. is a ubiquitous species of sea anemone in the North Aegean Sea. The large variation in coloration in this species is problematic for taxonomists and ecologists. Considerable variation exists within the cnidae of the red morph of A. equina mediterranea sensu Schmidt, 1972, but not within the green morph. The two color morphs of A. e. mediterranea possess distinguishable morphometry characteristics. The differences were mainly in the length/width ratio of the basitrichs from the actinopharynx, column, and tentacles, and the atrichs from the acrorhagi. Our results support a previous suggestion to erect a new species, Actinia prasina, for the green morphs in the North Aegean Sea.
