Abstract

The efforts of animal-welfare groups in the United States to sponsor national legislation that places stricter controls on the use of laboratory animals have been increasing in recent years. There is also considerable activity internationally, especially in Western Europe. A national referendum will soon go on the ballot in Switzerland that entirely prohibits the use of animals in biomedical research. A recent straw vote of Swiss citizens indicted that a majority of potential voters support the referendum.
