Abstract
The electromedical industries in India have been marketing a wide range of equipment for diagnostics and therapy. Thus, most of the conventional equipment for physiological monitoring is available in India today. However, patient safety and reliability factors have been given a low priority. It is necessary to set up standards on safety. Manufacturers may be given a safety certificate if their monitoring equipment satisfy the standards.The role of educational institutions should be other than building conventional electromedical equipment. The institutions should set up laboratory facilities for safety and reliability testing of electromedical equipment. Further, institutions should take up long term innovative projects so that introduction of new concepts in diagnostics and therapy is possible. Some new areas of research in biomedical engineering are discussed.
