Abstract

Biomedical engineering is a diverse field with many educational options at all degree levels. The particular curriculum chosen will have an impact on the career opportunities in the Medical Device Industry. In general, industrial employers prefer employees with a solid background in a traditional engineering discipline such as electrical or mechanical engineering. Most Medical Device companies do not seek persons with bachelor's degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Graduate degrees in Biomedical Engineering with special training in the life sciences are attractive to certain segments of the Medical Device Industry. The best recommendation is for Biomedical Engineers to have mastery of a traditional engineering discipline, and to be able to apply their analytical skills in solving problems in biology, physiology, and medicine.
