Abstract
ABSTRACT A substantial number of federal facilities are considering biomass as a source of renewable energy through district heating or combined heat and power (CHP) for their locations. A brief overview is provided of the commercially available technologies likely to best serve their existing energy demands. General economics are presented for a typical federal facility considering a biomass CHP or thermal project. The economics show that thermal projects are more economical than CHP projects for the sizes evaluated and that energy projects converting an existing fuel oil boiler facility to woody biomass can be very attractive. For site-specific biomass CHP or thermal project techno-economic feasibility, a more comprehensive feasibility study should be conducted to provide specific results.
