Abstract

Most of the paper industries in India are running with steam turbine-based cogeneration system using fossil fuels like coal and natural gas for the production of steam. This paper presents a mathematical model of a steam turbine cogeneration system to determine the optimal operating strategy for minimizing the monthly operating cost of the industry. The proposed model, which has the flexibility to apply to any industry with steam turbine cogeneration system, is multitime-interval and non-linear in nature and utilizes the genetic algorithm to minimize the total operating cost. By considering the high environmental impact of the fossil fuels, the alternative fuel option is analysed with groundnut shell. The optimal operation results a saving of 11.1% in the total operation and energy cost of the plant.
