Abstract
Purpose: There is an unmet need of positive clinical trials in hand osteoarthritis (OA). Knowledge of the appropriate pathways to target is essential in developing new therapies. Biomarkers of tissue turnover may reflect presence of disease as well as disease state and character, thereby elucidating the pathways involved in the disease process. In the HOPE study, patients treated with prednisolone showed a significantly reduced VAS pain as compared to patients receiving placebo. In this study we aim to investigate whether biomarkers of tissue turnover and inflammation are associated with hand OA disease characteristics, whether biomarker levels can predict response to therapy and whether these are influenced by therapy.
