Abstract

In the Caraka-Samhitā, an early Hindu treatise on medicine, biology was considered the most important of all sciences. “The science relating to life is regarded by the philosophers as the most meritorious of all the sciences because it teaches mankind what constitutes their good in both the worlds [spiritual and physical].”1 Good health helps people to fulfill their four purposes in life: dharma (duty), artha (prosperity), kāma (sensuality), and mokṣa (liberation).2
