Abstract

Information is presented on the life cycle and larval feeding habits of Hedria mixta Steyskal, a widely distributed species of malacophagous Diptera. There is 1 generation a year, with adults emerging from early summer to midsummer. Eggs are deposited shortly after females emerge but do not hatch until the following spring. Larvae are aquatic in vernal marshes, and they prey on pulmonate snails beneath the water surface. The egg, 3 larval instars, and puparium are described and illustrated. The position of H. mixta in the spectrum of larval feeding habits possessed by the Sciomyzidae is indicated. Evidence is given for considering that the closest relatives of the monotypic Nearctic genus Hedria belong to the Palearctic genus Knutsonia .
