Abstract

Synthetic Biology is concerned with the deliberate design and construction of organisms with new, naturally not occurring functions. To this end, the young discipline combines the classical disciplines of theoretical and experimental life sciences with engineering approaches “to help make biology easy to engineer” [1]. Potential applications of new biological systems and products lie in the areas of industrial biotechnology and medicine.
