Abstract
Summary Nitrifying organisms occur in the soils of three New Zealand tussock grasslands. A low nitrifying potential, particularly for the oxidation of nitrite, is shown by the moderately to strongly acid Tekoa soil near Bealey. The Taupo soil near Waiouru and the Omarama soil near Alexandra show much greater activity. An increase in activity has not been found at the base of Festuca tussock plants. The effect of seasons upon nitrifying activity has been briefly studied.
