Abstract
Green plants provide mankind with enormous quantities of food, fiber, oils, chemicals, and energy. Today there is great interest in increasing the productivity of the plant world, with plants, in essence, behaving as solar energy machines for capturing radiant energy and converting it into essential products. Unfortunately, one of the major barriers to productivity in many environments is the harmful effects of salt and water (drought) stress.
