Abstract

An enormous amount of biological sequence related resources are available on computers around the world. These resources include data, information, publications, software, and computing services. They are maintained by universities, government agencies, non-profit organizations, and large corporations. Computers within each of these organizations are connected together to form a Local Area Network (LAN). These LANs are then connected together to form a Wide Area Network (WAN). One network of WANs that connects computers around the world is known as the Internet. Any computer that is connected to the Internet can access resources that are made globally available on the Internet. At present, the Internet links over three million computers across more than 150 countries.
