Abstract

• A model Schiff base reacts with peroxynitrite yielding reactive oxygen species. • Triplet acetone and singlet oxygen are products from the EIBI-peroxynitrite reaction. • The EIBI-peroxynitrite reaction may occur via radical reaction or nucleophilic addition. • Direct- and DBAS-enhanced chemiluminescence result from excited products. • Unbalanced formation of biological Schiff base may produce deleterious effects.
