Abstract
Environmental physiology concerns itself with the functional characteristics of organisms that have evolved as adaptations to particular environmental situations. Such an approach towards understanding a most important aspect of biology would remain incomplete and would prove unsuccessful if it did not also encompass details of temporal organization, the precise order according to which all the different physiological changes and behavioral patterns are scheduled to occur in anticipation of, rather than in reaction to, the many cyclic environmental events.
