Abstract

Life-history data on the spotted alfalfa aphid, Therioaphis trifolii (Monell)4 were obtained in the laboratory by Graham (1959) through use of constant-temperature cabinets and by Messenger (1964), who used bioclimatic chambers which simulated daily fluctuating conditions of temperature and humidity. Nielson and Barnes (1957) made both laboratory studies and field studies in a lath house. Harpaz (1955) reared aphids caged in hurricane-lamp cimneys on potted alfalfa plants placed on an open porch. Only Dickson et al. (1955) caged aphids plants growing under normal field conditions. Their cages were made of 32-mesh/in. plastic screen fastened over metal frames large enough to accommodate entire mature plant. Because the spotted alfalfa aphid readily jumps when disturbed, they lost many of their experimental insects.
